Charles CANIVET, alias Jean de Nivelle, I could write a book about. Broadly speaking, he was born in Valognes(50), in 1939. He was a journalist in Paries (columnist for the 'Journal de Paris' and then for 'Soleil', but he was also a poet and novelist. He died in Paris in 1911. He wrote considerably about seafarers, particularly those from Cotentin, but also, as shown in the attached, about Breton sailors.
Amongst his numerous activities, Charles CANIVET was a member of the literary jury of the association 'La Pomme', which brought together Norman and Breton personalities. In case of necessity, you will find enclosed what I have on 'La Pomme'. Its principal members are immortalized in a painting of Krug, on exhibition at the town hall of 'La Ferté Macé'(61).
